Reykjanes peninsula and caving

1/15
DESCRIPTION

Reykjanes means literally 'smoking peninsula' cause it's crossed by the mid-atlantic ridge and it's still volcanically active.

Once we have left Reykjavik, in just half an hour we will be sorrounded only by lavafields covered by thick moss. We leave the main road and drive out of the beaten track to experience the incredible landscapes that Iceland can offer. We will drive then along the coast by the ocean stopping in Grindavik, a typical fishing village famous for the saltfish.

Afterwards we visit some beautiful sea-cliffs at Krisuvikurbjarg arriving to an isolated lighthouse, perfect place for a pic-nic!!

On the way back to Reykjavik we stop first to Seltun, a geothermal area with fumaroles and hot-springs and then at Kleifarvatn, a large lake surrounded by beautiful mountains before reaching our last destination of the day, the lava cave of Leiðarendi!!!

The lava tube has just been left exactly like it has always been since it was formed around two thousand years ago by a volcanic eruption nearby. Inside the cave it's completely dark, the ground is uneven and the ceiling gets quite low in some parts. I will gear you up with helmets and head-lights. It's important to have good shoes and comfortable clothes. We will spend about an hour in the cave.

After this exciting activity, I drive you back to Reykjavik at your accommodation.
